Conclusion: American Victory | |
On October 28, Col. Marinus Willett started a pusuit of the British force that was driven off from the Battle of Johnstown on October 25.
On October 30, at 8:00 A.M., Willett finally caught up with the tail end of the British, commanded by Maj. John Ross. Ross commanded a force of British, Germans, Tories, and Indians. Ross had put Walter Butler, the Tory leader, in command of the rear guard. By 2:00 P.M., his men had already crossed the West Canada Creek by the time that Willett had caught up with him. The Americans and British started firing on each other.
The firing continued for a short while. All of the sudden, the British stopped firing and all was quiet. When Willett went to investigate, he found that the British had withdrawn. The only person left was Butler, who was mortally wounded. He was scalped and robbed by an Oneida. |
