On February 24, Col. Robert Barnwell and his St. Helena Volunteer Militia Company attempted to cross the Savannah River at Beaufort to burn the British stores in Georgia. He was attacked by the Beaufort Loyalist militia, commanded by Maj. Andrew Deveaux. The Patriots were driven back across the river.
