Conclusion: British Victory | |
On February 25, at Tydiman's Plantation, the Patriot force, commanded by Brig. Gen. Francis Marion, encountered the Loyalist force, commanded by Col. Benjamin Thompson. Both sides were startled by the appearance of each other's cavalry. Thompson quickly recovered and swung his cavalry into a field and formed a line of battle. Marion ordered Capt. John C. Smith to charge the forming Loyalists. Smith paniced and dashed into the woods, followed by the rest of the cavalry. This threw the whole attack into disorder. The British saw this confusion and attacked.
About 1/2 mile away, Marion rallied the cavalry but it was too late to change the battle's outcome.
